Linda Karshan
Drawings - January 19 until February 23, 2013

Museum Pfalzgalerie Kaiserslautern (Germany) shows as the first Geman Museum a review of Linda Karshans drawings. (April 7)

Linda Karshan gave her first exhibition in a German museum the title “Lines and
Movements – Bewegung und Linie”. Here already, she said something essential
about her use of pencil and paper. Even before she turns to her tools, she builds
up a physical tension by rhythmical counting and corresponding steps. With this,
she turns to her drawing table in a highly-concentrated state in order to transfer
her inner structure to each sheet of paper. Abstract formulations arise, ‘marks’,
which are distinguished by simplicity, calm and a certain strictness. Although Karshan’s
drawings show for the most part clear structures and a comprehensible
organisation, they breathe a different spirit to Minimal Art or Conceptual Art, which they at first sight seem to resemble. The movements of the pencil correspond to
no order laid down in advance. Rather, the lines which are created by her are free,
intuitive descriptions of a condition, which do not condense into a narrative motif,
but represent in themselves a sensation which is sometimes powerful, sometimes
finely searching. (Britta Buhlmann, Director Museum Pfalzgalerie Kaiserslautern)

It is the fifth solo show of Linda Karshan in Gallery Klein, Cologne.
The exhibition focuses on her works, drawn between 1995 - 2012.

Linda Karshan was born in Minneapolis (USA) 1947, she lives and works in London (UK) and Connecticut (USA). Her works are part of considerable museum as well as private collections as Kupferstichkabinett Berlin, Museum Folkwang, Essen, Museum Pfalzgalerie Kaiserslautern, Graphische Sammlung Munich, British Museum, The Courtauld, London and Collection Kramarsky NY.
