Linda Karshan
Intensity - Drawings and Prints - November 12 until December 10, 2016

We are proud to announce our fifth solo show of drawings and etchings by American draftswoman Linda Karshan. The exhibition will focus on drawings, that have been made from 1983 to 2016. We are showing for the first time in Europe a group of large scale etchings with drypoint printed at Burnet Edition NYC.

In 1994 Linda Karshan explored her working method.

To speak or write about Linda Karshan’s drawings can only mean describing the process of their formation. But not as a process of forming something that ends up as a drawing. It means describing the drawing itself as the process of its own formation.

Even before she enters her studio Karshan begins to count, in repetitive and rhythmical sequences of varying lengths, it might be 2, 4, 8 or 16 numerical units. Or even one. The rhythm continues in the studio, marched out loud, and takes over the movements of the legs, the arms, the whole body. This rhythm with its energy is, like the artist herself, a subject of the drawing. It is powered by its own strength. Linda Karshan follows it with the pulses of her drawing, with her „marks“. Within a drawing the rhythm can speed up and slow down, can span longer or shorter periods. (Matthias Bärmann)

Over the course of 30 years, she moved away from depiction, her drawings gradually became more geometric, but still her measure comes not from calculation but deep from within her body.

In April 2016 Linda Karshan made “Glint I-VII”, a group of seven etchings with drypoint at Burnet Edition in New York City.
“Very few lines describe these large, spare, graceful figures. They give the impression of the archaic. When carving the lines into the grounded plate, my body demanded that each line be carved once, twice, thrice and a fourth stroke. Each line is both etching and drypoint.” (Linda Karshan)

Linda Karshan, born 1947 in Minneapolis (MN), lives and works in London and New York. Her works were shown in solo museum shows as IVAM, Valencia, Spain, and Sir John Soane's Museum, London, UK in 2002, Kettle's Yard, Cambridge, UK, in 2003 and Museum Pfalzgalerie Kaiserlautern, Germany in 2013. Her drawings and etchings are held in public collections: The British Library, The British Museum, The Courtauld Institute of Art in London, UK and The Ashmolean Museum, Oxford, The Morgan Library and The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, and Kupferstichkabinett Berlin and Dresden, Museum Folkwang Essen, Museum Pfalzgalerie Kaiserslautern and Staatliche Graphische Sammlung Munich in Germany.

Galerie Werner Klein at COLOGNE FINE ART FAIR Contemporary, 17.-20.11.2016.
