Sebastian Rug
New drawings - September 23 until October 21, 2023

We are looking forward to presenting new drawings by Sebastian Rug.

Exhibitions with drawings by Sebastian Rug are very quiet. This one is in a special way. The most recent drawings were characterized by numerous variations in the condensation and superimposition of lines. The new drawings are characterized by a deliberately chosen filigree but no less fascinating simplicity of structure.

From a distance, one sees A4-sized framed sheets with rectangles on them that seem to be hung more or less at right angles without touching the edge of the sheet. Millimetre-small pencil lines are joined together to form flimsy textile or cell-like structures. Density and line thickness vary minimally and make the drawing fields flicker before the viewer's eyes.

For twenty years, Sebastian Rug has devoted all his attention to the microcosmic and explored the possibilities of drawing and its perceptibility.

In the drawings I try to find a metaphor for the immeasurable, to open a space both into the tiny and into the vast. The infinite itself remains intangible, but its likeness can appear on the border of the visible. (Sebastian Rug 2023)

Time seems to be an unlimited resource for the artist while creating. Viewers are invited to take just as much time for an intensive show of works, full of wonder at the drawings created at the limits of what is humanly possible.

The exhibition is complemented by etchings created by Sebastian Rug in 2002-2004, which represent the beginning of his pictorial language through the smallest units of strokes.

Sebastian Rug was born in 1974, he lives and works in Potsdam (DE). His drawings have been part of important institutional exhibitions on drawing: in 2008 in Drawing as Process at the Museum Folkwang in Essen, in 2016 in Drawing Spaces at the Hamburger Kunsthalle and in 2022 in Vom Zauber der Handbewegung at the Museum Pfalzgalerie Kaiserslautern and in Medium Drawing at the Kunstsammlung Gera.
