Hanns Schimansky draws every day. The confidence of his abstract lines is rooted in this decades-long practice. In his current solo exhibition, we are showcasing ink drawings from recent years.

Schimansky makes the drawing process varied and exciting for himself. He uses a wide variety of papers, working with ink pens, pencils, or colored pencils. He manipulates the paper, folds it, and marks the front and back. By folding the paper, he transforms the drawing into the third dimension. It is precisely there that unpredictable combinations of lines emerge. In this way, he becomes the first viewer, to whom he wishes to pose questions whose answers are not always possible.

Hanns Schimansky was born in Bitterfeld in 1949; he lives and works in Berlin. He has been a member of the Berlin Academy of Arts since 1997. Under the patronage of Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier, works by Schimansky and other members of the Academy of Arts were exhibited in June 2026 as part of the exhibition *Freiraum Kunst* at Bellevue Palace, which had been vacated prior to its renovation. At the same time, Galerie Pankow presented a retrospective of Schimansky’s work and published a comprehensive catalog.
