Hanns Schimansky
- so and so - November 07 until December 05, 2020
The second solo exhibition in the gallery's anniversary year is dedicated to the sign cosmos of Hanns Schimansky.
Hanns Schimansky's works on paper tell of the wandering of the pencil or the feather over the paper, of the folding of large sheets of paper, they tell of the artist's hand, which leaves manifold traces on the paper.
Schimansky is fascinated by papers, their surface properties and their colorfulness. He explores the surface of a sheet of paper with the most diverse feathers, observing the penetration or sitting of the ink as he does so.
We present an extensive group of current small-format sheets (20.5 x 29.5 cm) and colored folds from the years 2018 and 2019, which hide as much as they show. Front and back of a sheet of paper become equally visible, fragments of lines meet areas of color. Where do they begin? How do they continue? Questions that the artist asks himself when folding and us when looking at them.
Most recently, works by Hanns Schimansky were shown as part of the collection presentation at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. In 2021 the Graphic Collection of the Museum Pfalzgalerie in Kaiserlautern will dedicate an extensive exhibition to the artist.
